I always do Spookytober books, so I thought this year, I’d do Spookytober: Movies! These are some of my favorite horror/paranormal/suspense/overall spooky movies, in no special order.
Interview with the Vampire
Not so spooky as deliciously Southern Gothic, Interview with the Vampire shaped my love of vampires. And yes, ladies and gents, I love the movie just as much as the book.
*AUDIBLE GASPS EVRREHWHERE*
In fact, I just finished reading it at the end of August, and I really enjoyed it. However, I’ve never read The Vampire Lestat or others in the series… I hate Lestat. That sounds super childish. But I was (am) 100% Team Louis. FORRREEEEEVERRRR.
Maybe I’ll read them someday.
The movie, though. Featuring Brad Pitt as the woeful, lost Louis, Tom Cruise as Lestat, and super young and amazing Kirsten Dunst as Claudia, it’s a visual smorgasbord of awesome. Add a dash of Antonio Banderas as Armand, and you’ve got a delicious southern gothic tale to see.
The Haunting
Based on The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, the 1999 version of this movie has been a favorite of mine since its release.

Okay, I guess I need to make a “movie versus book” post… I tried to love the original book, but I just didn’t. I really prefer almost all of Shirley Jackson’s stories to this one (in novel form.)
While the ending is totally different than both the original film and novel, it’s still such a great movie with a great cast.
Hocus Pocus
Is it possible to have a Halloween movie list without Hocus Pocus?
I DOUBT IT.
A staple of my childhood, featuring the forever amazing Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, a witch trio who feed on the souls of children. That is, until they meet their 1990s match in a couple of kids! This movie is just tops. The costuming, details, the songs omg, I love everything about it. 13/10 will watch every time it’s on the 31 Nights of Halloween…
Thirteen Ghosts
Straight up crazy splatterhouse gore, with Matthew Lillard. I freaking love Matthew Lillard- I liked him in Scream and SLC Punk, but oddly enough, I fell in love with him in 2000’s Love’s Labour’s Lost (seriously, it’s got him, Alicia Silverstone, Kenneth Brannaugh in it, it’s awesome.) A super eccentric B-horror film, it involves an evil machine-pretending-to-be-a-house, run by twelve ghosts, that opens the eye of hell. It’s a trip.
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
If I can’t be Morticia Addams when I grow up, can I at least be Elvira? I’ve always loved this badass goth chick. Smart, hilarious, strong, witty, and killer looks? Yes please. Really, any and all Elvira goes here: Movie Macabre, 13 Nights of Elvira, Haunted Hills… it’s all great.
The Addams Family
The original tv series was great. The cartoon was good. But nothing, in my humble opinion, beats the 1991 version of The Addams Family. Raul Julia, Anjelica Houston, Christopher Lloyd… and some of the best movie lines ever!
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Full disclosure: I watch this at Halloween. I watch & read this at Christmas. I watch it in May, I GIVE NO DAMNS. A quintessential spooky kid movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas has been a beacon for lovely weirdos since the early 90s. Interesting point: so many things on this list have that same description…
