Today we’re talking about a new Epic Fantasy coming our way in March: Rebel’s Blade by Frost Kay! Rebel’s Blade is Kay’s debut novel, and it sounds like it’s coming out swinging. Let’s chat!
Tell us about Rebel’s Blade.
The name of my debut novel is Rebel’s Blade, it’s the first book in The Aermian Feuds. It’s about two opposing sides: the rebellion and the crown. Their world is fraught with danger, intrigue, secrets, and deception. Nothing is black and white.
Secretly trained swordsmith Sage Blackwell steps up to run her family’s forge when her father falls ill. Sage desires to help the neglected Aermians but is bound by duty to provide for her own… Until, that is, she’s offered a chance to make a difference.
THE REBELLION
Sage knows the risks; imprisonment or death, and yet, she’s still willing to take them to protect her family. But when plans unravel, Sage finds herself facing the devils themselves, her sworn enemies, the princes of Aermia.
THE CROWN
Tehl Ramses is drowning; crops are being burned, villages pillaged, and citizens are disappearing, leading to a rising rebellion. As crown prince, and acting ruler, Tehl must find a way to crush the rebellion before civil war sweeps through his beloved kingdom. He’ll do whatever is necessary to save his people. Yet, his prisoner is not at all what he expected.
ONE STORY. TWO SIDES. ONE GOAL: SAVE AERMIA.
This. Sounds. Amazing. UNGH! What other genres do you write? Do you stick to just Epics?
I write fantasy, really all types. Rebel’s Blade is a hybrid between High and Epic fantasy. I have another couple WIP that are urban fantasy and sci-fi…I am a total nerd. Lol.
You are a lady after my own heart. And you’re surrounded by nerds here! …That didn’t sound as good in writing as it did in my head. I MADE IT AWKWARD. Uh, sooooo~ what inspired you to start writing, and what keeps you going?
Since I was a child, I have always had stories running through my mind. I loved reading anything with high spirited girls. One of my favorite YA authors was Tamora Pierce. She shaped how I thought about women and writing. I didn’t know the first thing about writing books, but my characters kept clamoring until I broke down wrote their stories.
Yep, that’s how it happens for me too. They claw at your grey matter until they get out! I start to feel a bit of sensory overload if I don’t write for long periods, especially if I’m in the middle of writing a specific thing. Any story or publishing shenanigans to share with us?
Stars above, there are so many. One of my favorites was when I received my first round of edits, and there was so much red that I almost had a heart attack. One comment went like this:
Tehl glanced up just in time to see Sam and Gav trade. ⇦⇦?? Trade what? Glances? Places? Pokemon Cards?⇨⇨
I laughed till my belly ached. Moral of the story: never take yourself too seriously.
Ugh. I remember Godeater: The Second World edits- it was my debut novel, and… yeah my pages could have been bleeding, there was so much red to wade through! But seeing all that red does something else too: it means that you actually wrote the thing. You completed a work! You wrote a story! It was on paper instead of just an idea in your head, and that feeling, to me, is awesome. Any advice for your fellow writers?
Write every day, even if it’s just a sentence or two to keep the creative juices flowing. Also don’t be afraid to reach out to others in the indie community. You’ll find they’re warm, welcoming, and helpful. Even if they can’t help you, they will point you into the direction of someone who can.
Right on! Or shall I say, WRITE ON?! I know, I know- I’m totally the first person to ever make that joke. Ever.
I told you, you were surrounded by nerds. ❤
Do you have any favorite authors, titles, etc. that you’d like to share? What are your inspirations in the author world?
There are too many to list! But I’ll let you in on a few that I fangirl over, and pre-order automatically: Jaymin Eve, Jane Washington, Scarlett Dawn, Kelly St. Clare, Rachel E. Carter, and Laura Thalassa; she writes a killer villain. I also adore Tamora Pierce; she set the standard for high fantasy for me.
I’ve never read anything by Jaymin Eve- I need to get on that! My GoodReads page is going to have a TIME today. Okay, let’s get your Social Media details, so everyone can find you!
